Insomnia & CBT-I in London and online
Insomnia is a recognised medical condition, and it is not your fault. I offer one-to-one CBT for insomnia, the first-line treatment recommended by NICE and the British Sleep Society, by secure video across the UK and in person in London.
What Is Insomnia?
Insomnia is more than a few bad nights. It is a pattern of difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep or waking too early, and it is the effect on your waking life that makes it a clinical concern.
It is the most common sleep disorder, yet many people never receive a proper assessment. Instead they are given sleeping tablets, which may help in the short term but do little to address the cause.
When Should You Get Urgent Help?
Most insomnia is not an emergency, but please get help quickly in these situations.
| What you notice | What to do |
|---|---|
| Thoughts of harming yourself | Call 999, or NHS 111 and choose the mental health option |
| Falling asleep while driving | Stop driving and speak to your GP the same day |
| Low mood or anxiety that will not lift | Book an urgent GP appointment |
How Insomnia Affects Your Days
- Fatigue: tiredness that does not lift with rest
- Low mood: irritability, worry and feeling flat
- Concentration: difficulty focusing at work or at home
- Anxiety about bedtime: dreading the night before it begins
Treatment Options
We will work out the right path together. For many people this is CBT-I on its own; for others it sits alongside a careful review of their medicines.
One-to-one CBT for insomnia
Delivered one-to-one and tailored to you. There is no group setting and no workbook handed across a desk.
Medication review
A careful review of what you take now, including support to reduce sleeping tablets safely where that is right for you.
Treating other sleep disorders
Sleep apnoea or restless legs can sit behind insomnia. I will look for these and treat them.
CBT-I or Sleeping Tablets?
| Compare | CBT-I | Sleeping tablets |
|---|---|---|
| Aim | Changes the thoughts and habits that keep insomnia going | Short-term help with sleep |
| Length | A series of sessions | Usually a short course |
| Effects | Sleep can feel harder for a short time at first | Possible drowsiness and dependence |
CBT-I is recommended as the first treatment for long-term insomnia. The right choice for you depends on your health and history.
What CBT-I Involves
- Sleep rescheduling: rebuilding sleep drive and consolidating broken sleep
- Stimulus control: retraining the brain to link bed with sleep
- Cognitive work: gently challenging unhelpful thoughts about sleep
- Relaxation: techniques to reduce arousal at night
- Sleep habits: guidance based on your life, not generic tips
You will be supported with sleep tracking and regular review throughout.
Why See a Sleep Physician?
CBT-I sounds simple on paper, but pacing and personalisation matter. For people with insomnia alongside anxiety, depression, chronic pain or another sleep disorder, expert guidance is essential.
As a consultant physician with specialist training, I can look for underlying conditions and deliver evidence-based treatment for insomnia.
“You are not broken. Sleep is a skill that can be rebuilt, and I would love to help you do that.”
